DURANGO CAMPUS RETROFIT

Phoenix, Arizona

The Durango Campus Retrofit project is a green infrastructure retrofit of the existing campus of the Flood Control District of Maricopa County. The project goals were to reduce potable water use by over 50% while integrating contemporary and cutting-edge Green Infrastructure into the design. The site will serve as a learning laboratory and showpiece of newer stormwater and flood control management approaches for municipalities and design teams.

Other design elements included the incorporation of cool materials, such as permeable pavements and Silva Cell type suspended pavement, which provides trees access to the necessary tree rooting area. Site grading accomplished the passive rainwater harvesting goal by utilizing smaller site basins, surface water capture, curb cuts, sediment traps, and check dams to manage and control captured stormwater and direct it for the benefit of the site landscape.
