EL RIO NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER

Tucson, Arizona

This GSI landscape retrofit of the El Rio Neighborhood Center is a demonstration project for the City of Tucson’s Storm to Shade Program. WERK’s contribution included irrigation renovation, planting design and implementation of low impact development strategies such as curb cores, biofiltration basins, sediment traps, and pedestrian bridges. The retrofit incorporates multiple GSI strategies including harvesting stormwater by utilizing existing downspouts from the various buildings and basketball court roof to direct stormwater into newly constructed basins, increasing shade through the addition of 40 new trees, and adding dozens of new native shrubs, succulents, and grasses. The fully native plant palette increases pollinator activity significantly while encouraging voluntary reseeding of plants. WERK also developed graphic visioning for future educational signage throughout the site. A streamlined design process helped obtain quick victories for the City to demonstrate built GSI modalities, highlighting the City’s Climate Action efforts.
